At Masonboro Baptist Church, we believe that each and every child is a gift from God and an important part of our faith community. Everything we do is designed to align with our primary purpose, which is to guide children to experience and respond to God's love. Additionally, our ministry is family-focused so parents are never left out of the loop. Afterall, parents have the God-given responsibility of serving as the primary faith educators of their children. Our work at the church is intended to support, supplement, and enrich the work parents are already doing in their home.
Our Commitments:
- We commit to welcome children into the community of faith, valuing their unique contributions, nurturing their developing gifts, and respecting their developmental needs.
- We commit to partner with families as they strive to pass the Christian faith on to their children, providing the support, resources, and education necessary to be godly parents.
- We commit to provide opportunities for children and their families to experience God through worship, to grow in their faith through discipleship, to love and serve others in the name of Christ, to hear and share the story of God’s work in our world, and to develop supportive relationships with others in the congregation.
- We commit to model Christian growth and service for our children as we lead by example.
- We commit to strive to provide engaging learning experiences for our children keeping in mind the needs of the whole child and recognizing the unique learning needs of each child.
- We commit to provide a loving and safe environment in which children can learn and grow.
- We commit to recruit, train, and support volunteers from the congregation who can help us fulfill our mission.

Parenting Resources
Boundaries With Kids by Cloud and Townsend. Zondervan, 1998.
This follow up to the books Boundaries: When to Say Yes, When to Say No to Take Control of Your Life and Boundaries in Marriage offers an approach to parenting that is focused on teaching children to set and maintain appropriate personal boundaries as well as building responsibility in children. The book’s principles are based on biblical principles of responsibility, stewardship, and self-control. Parents learn to interact with their children in ways that help them develop good boundaries. This book is appropriate for parents of children of all ages.
Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood by Jim Fay and Charles Fay. Love and Logic Institute, 2000.
This fun parenting book provides lots of practical suggestions any parent can apply to common problems parents face with their young children such as tantrums, power struggles, potty training, whining, and sibling rivalry. This book focuses on specific strategies parents of children from birth through six years of age can apply that will reduce stress in the home and increase their child’s ability to learn from his or her mistakes.
Parenting With Love and Logic: Teaching Children Responsibility by Cline and Fay. Pinon Press, 1990, 2006.
I highly recommend this book as the staple for developing an effective strategy for responding to and managing your child’s behavior. The principles in this resource will help your children learn to be responsible and make good choices and will help you learn effective ways to respond to common problems that reduce or eliminate power struggles in your home. Specific help is given for helping parents deal with nearly 50 common areas in which children may develop problem behaviors. Parents of any age child can benefit from this book, but those with children between the ages of 5 and 12 will find it the most helpful.
Parenting Teens with Love and Logic: Preparing Adolescents for Responsible Adulthood by Cline and Fay. Pinon Press, 1992, 2006.
This is the last in the Love and Logic series and has been specifically written to deal with typical pre-adolescent and adolescent behavior effectively. Parents learn to apply the love and logic principles to their rapidly changing relationship with their teens. Appropriate sharing of control and decision-making along with predictable consequences for irresponsible choices are the staples of this parenting philosophy. Many specific situations are discussed in detail including aggression, physical appearance, dating, peer pressure, money, grades, resistance to church, and mood swings.
Transforming the Difficult Child: The Nurtured Heart Approach by Glasser and Easley. Center for the Difficult Child Publications, 1998.
This highly structured approach to discipline and behavior problems is designed to assist parents who are raising intense children with psychological or emotional challenges. It is based on the premise of providing as much attention as possible for positive behaviors. Detailed help is given for establishing a credit system to discourage negative behaviors and reward positive behaviors, which allows the very challenging child or teen to experience success. This book is helpful to parents of foster children, children with emotional disorders, children with ADHD, children who have suffered abuse, and unusually rebellious children/teens.
The Five Love Languages of Children by Chapman and Campbell. Northfield, 1997.
This resource teaches parents to discover the primary love language of their child in order to improve their relationship and interactions. The premise is that every person primarily experiences love through one of the following: physical touch, words of affirmation, quality time, gifts, or acts of service. Knowing which language best communicates love to your child can make communication, discipline, and learning more positive and productive. Knowing they are loved is foundational to the development of all children. Sometimes parents think they are communicating love, but their children aren’t hearing them because they are speaking a language their child doesn’t understand.
